A GenieACS-Based Approach for Internet Network Monitoring and Management using TR-069 Protocols

Abstract
Background: Internet Service Providers (ISPs) manage a large number of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), making efficient monitoring and remote management essential. In practice, manual remote reboot of CPE devices is time-consuming, requiring approximately 2.5 minutes per device, which can exceed two hours for 50 devices. Existing monitoring tools provide limited integration between monitoring and control functions, leading to operational inefficiencies.
Methods: This research proposes a centralized network monitoring and management system based on the TR-069 protocol using the GenieACS platform deployed on a Proxmox VE virtualized environment. The research follows the Design–Implement–Operate (DIO) network lifecycle methodology. The system is implemented on Mikrotik CPE devices and evaluated in a real-world ISP environment by comparing manual remote operations with automated GenieACS-based management.
Results: The implementation demonstrates a significant improvement in operational efficiency. The total reboot time for 50 CPE devices is reduced from 125 minutes using manual remote methods to only 3 minutes using GenieACS, achieving a 97.6% efficiency improvement. Additional performance evaluation shows stable network conditions with latency ranging from <1 ms to 13 ms depending on the transmission medium, and 0% packet loss across all test scenarios.
Conclusion: The proposed GenieACS-based TR-069 system provides an efficient, scalable, and practical solution for ISP network monitoring and management. By enabling centralized control and automation, the system significantly reduces operational time and complexity while maintaining stable network performance. The approach is particularly suitable for large-scale ISP environments managing heterogeneous CPE devices.
