Preparation and Evaluation of Mucoadhesive Film Containing Alcoholic Extracts Of Fruits of Coccina grandis and Rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza glabra for Treating Mouth Ulcers

Abstract
Background and Aim: Fruits of Coccinia grandis and rhizomes of Glycyrrhiza glabra are reported to have utility in treatment of mouth ulcers and other ulcers. In mouth ulcers there is rupture of oral mucosal layer further this can lead to infections. The objective of the present study is to utilize the healing potentials of these two herbs and formulate mucoadhesive film which has added advantage of longer stay in oral cavity.
Methods: The extracts of C.grandis and G. glabra were standardized for the content of Lupeol and Glycyrrhetinic acid respectively. Mucoadhesive patch was prepared by casting film of Polyvinyl alcohol and Carbopol containing ethanolic extracts of fruits of C. grandis and rhizomes of G.glabra. The patch was evaluated for content of Glycyrrhetinic acid and Lupeol, folding endurance, moisture content. pH, mucoadhesive time, mucoadhesive strength and release profile.
Results: The standardized extracts were incorporated into mucoadhesive patch with the content of Lupeol and Glycyrrhetinic acid to be 0.548 mg and 0.507 mg respectively, in a patch size of 2 cm in diameter and weighing 18 mg. The release profile indicated release of 50% of Glycyrrhetinic acid while 70 % lupeol from the patch. Mucoadhesion time of about 180 minutes and mucoadhesive strength of 6.47 dyne/ cm2.
Conclusion: Mucoadhesive buccal patches containing alcoholic extracts of roots /rhizomes G.glabra and fruits of C. grandis could be successfully formulated.
