Analgesic Prescribing During Pregnancy and Paracetamol Safety Awareness Among Dental Professionals in the West Bank, Palestine

Cezar Edward Lahham, Aram George Shatara, Jihad Abdallah Taamrah.

Abstract
Aim/Background:
Pain management during pregnancy requires careful consideration due to potential risks to both the mother and fetus. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is generally considered the first-line analgesic during pregnancy, however, emerging evidence regarding possible neurodevelopmental effects has raised ongoing scientific discussion. This study aimed to assess analgesic prescribing patterns among dental professionals in the West Bank, Palestine, with a particular focus on paracetamol use and medication safety awareness.
Methods:
A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 253 licensed dental professionals practicing in the West Bank. Data were collected electronically using a structured self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used for data analysis, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.
Results:
Among participants, 62% were general dentists and 38% were specialists. Most respondents (88.7%) identified paracetamol as the safest first-line analgesic during pregnancy. Additionally, 80.6% believed that most medications may pose risks during pregnancy. No statistically significant association was found between professional status and prescribing preferences or medication safety perceptions (p > 0.05).
Conclusion:
Dental professionals in the West Bank demonstrated consistent prescribing practices regarding analgesic use during pregnancy, with paracetamol being widely preferred as the first-line option. The findings highlight the need for clearer clinical guidance and continued professional education to support evidence-based prescribing practices.
